97 Wedding Proposal Ideas

Ok, some of these are totally lame. But...some are pretty cool. A friend of mine read a lame one and it sparked an idea that he used as a wedding proposal to his boyfriend...so don't judge too quickly. Plus, lame to one person might be romantic to another. :)

  1. Have a waiter bring you her favorite dessert with the ring on top of it. (Be sure she notices it and careful that she does not swallow it. :)

  2. Take her/him to the theatre and ask the stage manager if he will allow you to come up on stage and propose after the final curtain.

  3. Show up at her/his office in the middle of the afternoon armed with a red rose, a bottle of champagne and a glass with the ring in it.

  4. Write "Will you marry me (name)?" in chalk on the street out side your house or apartment in big letters.

  6. Gather all your friends and family for drinks either at a favorite restaurant or your home and pop the question in front of everyone.

  7. Gather friends and family outside his/her home waving banners with the words "Will you marry me?" on them and you standing in front of them all on one knee holding the ring. (Make sure that they get the right house).

  11. Cut the bottom out of a very large box then wrap it. Take it to her place of work and ask one of her colleagues to go get her, telling her that there is a large parcel for her. 15. Cook your loved one a romantic meal and place a note around the napkin like it is a napkin holder asking her/him to marry you; or, slip the napkin (use fabric ones not paper!) through the ring, when she goes to put her napkin in her lap she will find the ring.

  16. Give her a foot massage and place the ring on her little toe.

  41. Take him to see his favorite sports team playing and get the commentator to ask him to marry you.

  42. Arrange to meet her in a beautiful park near some riding stables. Rent a knight's armor from a costume shop or theatrical company and pick it up on the way. Rent a horse at the stables, don the armor, ride to meet her and offer to be her prince. Present the loose diamond with princely flair on bended knee. You could have someone in the bushes nearby ready to play Holst's "Jupiter" as she starts to see you in the distance.

  43. Cook dinner and set an elaborate candlelight table (or cater if you are not talented in the kitchen) for a quiet romantic dinner for two at home. Serve her a glass of champagne with the diamond ring in the bottom or ribboned to the stem.

  44. Have an artist paint her portrait, adding a box with a diamond ring in her hand before you present it. When you present the portrait, have the ring ready when she asks about it.

  45. Bring home a sweet stuffed animal with a ribbon for a collar. Have the ring in the bow for her to find as she cheerfully greets her new friend.

  47. Hire a magician to entertain just the two of you. Have the magician make the box with the diamond mysteriously appear as the surprise ending of the last trick.

  48. Memorize a short French poem and recite the poem to her at a French restaurant as you offer the ring. Be sure to know what each word means so you can demonstrate your savoire faire. Have the diamond ring ready in a presentation box.

  49. Decorate a Christmas tree with lights and only one ornament - a ribbon or bow tied around a velvet ring box. Ask her over for a Christmas celebration for just the two or you.

  50. For a very traditional approach, ask her father for her hand in marriage. When the approval is given, make plans for the next family gathering and make your proposal to her in private with diamond in hand. When she says yes, stand up and announce your engagement to everyone.

  51. Prime a friend with harmless little secrets about the two of you, and have him pose as a psychic when you dial. Be sure to ask the right personal questions to make it look authentic. Have the psychic predict a diamond in her very near future. Then make you proposal on the spot.

  52. At a college or professional sporting event (if you both like sports), arrange to have your message displayed on the scoreboard after halftime...Kate...Will you marry me? Have the diamond ready in a presentation box.

  53. Arrange to have dinner together at your favorite Chinese restaurant. Have the waiter give her a special fortune cookie with "Will you marry me?" in it. Or you could have it say, "You will receive a diamond in the very near future," and present the diamond in a box.

  54. Invite her for some games at home. Use Scrabble letters and spell out "Will you marry me?" Have the diamond close by.

  55. Create a personal Web page with her name and your proposal with a picture of the diamond in its velvet presentation box, and send her the Web address. Or sit down together to surf for good vacation sites, and visit a site or two before you type in the site address.

  56. Set a date to go to the movies, then rent ad space for your proposal at your favorite theater. Make sure you have the diamond with you.

  57. Take her for a surprise picnic at the beach or in the woods. At the picnic spot, spell out Marry Me with stones, flowers or seashells. Put the diamond in her hand when she says yes.

  58. Rent a limousine for the evening. Have the driver pick you up first, then pick her up at home or work. Ask the driver to roll up the privacy window. Have one of her favorite evening dresses inside to change into. Take her to an elegant restaurant where you have pre-arranged to have the restaurant serve the meal in the limo in the parking lot for your own romantic dinner. Be sure to tell the servers to make it a picnic and ask them not to disturb you after the main course is served. Have the driver play your favorite romantic music, while you enjoy the privacy for your unique dinner. Present the diamond instead of dessert.

  59. Tell her to take time off work and arrange for everything to be covered for a week (but do not tell her where you will be going). Make all the plans for a weeks vacation in a five-star resort in Mexico. Propose one evening at a restaurant with serenading mariachis. You can have the diamond ready in your pocket.

  60. Order a dozen red roses and pick them up yourself at the shop. Write the card to say, "Will you marry me?" and put the diamond in a presentation box with the roses. Present the flowers during a candlelight dinner for two at home (cater if you cannot cook).

  61. Mail her a romantic poem from Shakespeare or Browning. Include a photo of yourself on your knees with a diamond in your hand, and write on the back in marker, "Will you marry me?" Be ready, hiding outside her house when she normally opens her mail, and go inside with the diamond in hand when you hear her scream with joy.

  62. For the serious netizens: E-mail a 3-D animated graphic of a diamond ring, with the message, "Will you marry me?" If you can, time the delivery of the e-mail when you can be there in person to see her reaction and get your answer.

  63. If no kids, hide the diamond in a box with your proposal message in a place she will certainly look during the day, such as in the butter dish if she eats toast every morning, or in the silverware drawer before dinner, or with her makeup in the morning. Try to be there when you expect her to find it.

  64. Arrange for a day at a private beach together, building sand castles or digging for shells. On the night before, write a love poem on a piece of parchment paper, roll it into an antique bottle with a cork, and bury it in a well marked spot in the sand near your diggings. Be sure you find the bottle as you dig together. Open and read the poem, then present the diamond from your pocket and ask her for her hand in marriage.

  65. Only for the really bold and mature relationship: Surprise her with a proposal and wedding all at once! Schedule a vacation in Hawaii where marriage requirements are less. Arrange every detail of a full wedding through the staff at the tourist bureau and your chosen resort hotel, including a dress and relatives. When you go out for dinner, have everyone hide nearby, listening for her answer and their cues. As soon as she answers your proposal, start the wedding on the spot!

  66. If she wakes up each morning to the clock radio, arrange for an ad on her usual station at just the right time so she hears your proposal when she wakes up in the morning. Try to be at her door (or beside her) when she hears your public proposal, and have the diamond in hand.

  67. If she is a school teacher, you could propose with all the school listening. Get permission from the school principal. Record a videotaped proposal and plat it over the school video system, or make an announcement over the intercom. Then go to her classroom and give her the diamond with everyone cheering.

  68. If she loves puzzles, disguise your proposal as an anagram that works out to read: Will You Marry Me? and pretend to work on it with her for entertainment while you are waiting for dinner to arrive at a fine restaurant.

  69. If she likes cute stories, you could make a storybook of two animals (with your names) falling in love and getting engaged. Take two stuffed animals, put a coat hanger in their backs and make them hold a position, then set up the animals to act out the story while you take photos. Type the words to the story on your computer and paste them to each page. Write the last page to say, Will you marry me?, with a picture of the diamond in its presentation box. Take it all to a printer to have it bound as a booklet, then present the book at a private moment at home. Be ready with the real diamond when she gets to the last page.

  70. If you have a talking bird or parrot, train it to say, "Will you marry me?" and make a big show with the new words he has learned at a romantic moment.

  71. If she has deep ties with her family: Make up a special Christmas or birthday present when she will be traveling alone to see the family without you and send it with her as a gift to open with her family on the big day. Place the diamond in a presentation box between two plush velvet pillows into a gift box. Type your proposal on parchment paper and pin it to a pillow next to the diamond, and wrap it all as a gift. Be near a phone during the day when she will open the present.

  72. If she has been waiting for her big chicken to finally ask her: Arrange to meet her for lunch where she works. Rent a Big Bird costume from the local theatrical shop and wear it on the way. She will not know who it is inside, so write a card that says you have been sent by a dear friend (so she will not recognize your voice). Show another card that asks her name to confirm she is the right woman. Then give her a paper bag with a large plastic Easter egg in it (one of the ones that open with candy inside). Inside the egg, put the diamond box and a message, "Will you marry me?"

  73. Buy a small book of poetry and make a cutout the size of the ring through all of the pages. Place and tape the ring into the empty space. Write your own special poem, insert it into the first page of the book and present it to her.

  74. Take the engagement ring and tie a thread to it. Tie the other end of the thread around your finger. Tell your partner, I have a present for you, but there is a string attached.

  75. During a special evening, present your love with three roses: Tell her one represents the past, one represents the present, and the last one (with the ring tied to it) represents the future.

  76. Propose to your partner on your birthday. Pretend to be sick of opening presents and tell your partner to open one. Just make sure the one she opens is the box with the ring in it. By the time they have looked twice be waiting on one knee and pop and questions.

  77. Most movie theaters have repeating advertising slides before the previews that can be purchased. Write her name up in lights, and be sure to get to the theatre early enough.

  78. Return to the exact place where you and your girlfriend first met. Talk about some great moments you have shared, and then say something like "We have had an amazing journey together so far, and now I think we are ready to take the next step in that journey. I am hoping you will do me the honor of marrying me."

  79. Use a projector to shine your proposal onto a wall, house or other landmark that passes on her daily route home. Note you may need to get permission from a council depending on where you plan to do this.

  80. When she comes in the door from work, have a pathway of tealight candles and rose petals waiting to lead her into the living room. Place a huge wrapped box in the centre of the room with a note that says "Open me." Inside place another box and inside that another, each with its own note which could be part of your proposal or part of a poem. The boxes will keep getting smaller and smaller until you gets to the smallest box of all which of course will contain the ring. When she opens the very last box, appear in the doorway, get down on one knee, and propose.

  81. Take a romantic stroll on a beach. Arrange for someone to drop a bottle on the shore when your partner is not looking. Get her to open it up where she will find a message (your proposal) and a ring.

  82. Learn some magic tricks and put on a small show for her. Your grand finale will be to pull an engagement ring out of your hat.

  83. Call a jewelry shop of your choice and arrange for them to open the store just for yourself and your partner. Get them to place all their rings (or at least the ones you can afford) out on a table. Take your girlfriend to the store and ask her to pick one.

  84. For those who are musically gifted try your hand at writing and recording a song for your partner. Upload it to her ipod and tell her about this great new song you have heard and ask her to listen to it.

  85. If you are artistic, draw or paint a picture of yourself proposing to your partner. If you are not talented in this department, you can always arrange for a street artist to draw it for you while you pretend to pose for a portrait together.

  86. Freeze the ring in an ice cube and drop it in her glass, while you are at your favorite restaurant. When she realizes what is in her drink, get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.

  87. Go to a local bakery. Instruct them to bake a cake with a marriage proposal on it and put it in the window. Take her on a romantic nighttime stroll right past the bakery, and point to the personalized cake in the window. Drop down on one knee, pull out the ring, and ask her to marry you. This way you can have your cake and eat it too, literally.

  88. Pretend to drop your napkin in front of her at a restaurant. Ask her to pick it up, and while she is not looking, drop the ring in her wine glass. When she sees the ring, propose to her.

  89. Purchase fortune cookies and take out the fortunes with a pair of tweezers. Swap the fortunes with a piece of paper that says, "Will you marry me?" Then bring her to your favorite Chinese restaurant and have the waiter bring out her fortune after the meal.

  90. Have breakfast in bed together on a Sunday morning. Make her a beautiful breakfast with scrambled eggs, fruit, and mimosas. After you are done eating, tell her there is just one thing left you have to give her, and pull out the ring.

  91. Send her one rose a day for consecutive days. One the 2th day, she will be expecting the last rose to complete the dozen. Instead, show up with a dozen more roses and an engagement ring, and ask her to marry you.

  92. Book a room for the two of you at a fancy hotel. Decorate it with flower petals and scented candles. Put rose petals all over the room, leading into the bathtub. Give her a robe, and ask her to look in the pocket. After she finds the ring, propose. Then give her a relaxing massage in the tub.

  93. Make a rose petal trail from the front door to the bedroom. Create a heart shape with rose petals on the bed, and put the ring in the middle. Tell her to go see what is in your heart.

  94. If she is a thrill seeker, take her skydiving. After you land, tell her if you make it through this you can make it through anything. Pull out a ring from your pocket and propose.

  95. For a more tame air idea, arrange a sunset hot air balloon ride for her. As you watch the beautiful sky, tell her how much you love her and ask her to marry you.

  96. Go Bungee jumping. You wait at the bottom of the cliff. When she is at the top looking down, pull out a sign that says "Will you marry me?"

  97. Propose to her on Christmas. Put the ring in a box, and hang it like an ornament on the tree. After all the presents have been opened, tell her there is one more special gift for her. Direct her to the ornament, and get down on your knees to propose.
